I just wanted to take a few minutes to recommend a book I have just finished reading, and thoroughly enjoyed. The book is called “Planet Google – One Company’s Audacious Plan to Organize Everything We Know” by Randall Stross.

As you all know, more than 70% of all online information searches occur via the Google search engine. Consequently, the more blog publishers can learn about:

(1) how the Google search engine functions, and
(2) how Google as a company operates and continues to be innovative in the face of stiff competition – the greater chance you can find a way to rank your blog higher than your competition in Google’s organic search results. And so, having enjoyed this deep look at the history and inner workings of Google - I strongly recommend that you grab a copy from my affiliate link below. It will be the best 10$ you spend all month!

As a side note, I will say - if you are an avid reader and want to write book reviews for your own blog, be sure to sign up for the Amazon affiliate program so that you can make some money with your book reviews – JUST LIKE I AM RIGHT NOW! (Assuming you buy this book by clicking the link below!)

What to expect from the book?

When I was younger, I was an avid diary writer. The biggest lesson I learnt from my years of writing diaries, was that while one will often remember WHAT life decisions they might have made, one will often forget exactly WHY you made that particular decision, and what particular circumstances surrounded your decision making process. Reading my old diaries reminds me exactly how I was thinking at a particular point in time, and I think that can be a powerful lesson.

When I read “Planet Google”, I had a similar feeling. We all have an idea of how Google has changed the world, but we have never had insight into WHY Google made particular decisions and certain times in it’s history.

We have all witnessed the huge influence the internet and Google in particular have had on the world – however only Google employees have been privileged to learn exactly why Google acted a certain way at particular time in it’s short but intense history. Randal Stross however gets exclusive access to some of this important information, and details it in an engaging way for the reader. For example, the book answers questions like:

  • Why did Google buy You Tube?
  • How did GMAIL really start?
  • How did Google dominate online advertising?
  • What mistakes did Google make?
  • What is Google’s ultimate goal, and current strategic direction?

Where else can I get information about Google?

While I was reading this book, I also came across an excellent video documentary that I think really compliments this book. It was produced by a Canadian TV show called Doc Zone and is called “Google World”. I certainly recommend watching this movie, as it exposes some hidden secrets about the work culture at Google, thereby providing some great lessons about work and life.

What do you think?

When you have finished the “Google Planet” book and watched the “Google World” documentary, you will know everything you ever wanted to know about Google and how the company operates. I personally feel that there are many great lessons to be learnt from both the book and the movie – and I look forward to hearing what you think about both.

Let me know if you enjoyed them as much as me?
